Camping is being calm, appreciating the simple things in life and knowing that things do not have to be so complex. This thought process opens our eyes to see a positive or more clear outlook on life in general. Relax, unwind, disconnect and let the stress of everyday life just slip away.

What is the benefit of camping?

Camping is an active pastime, and whichever camping style you choose, you’re increasing your daily activity levels. Activities such as swimming, hiking, or canoeing, raise your heart rate and provides plenty of benefits for health. More daily activity means a healthier heart, faster metabolism, and more resilient/strong joints and muscles.

You also can’t underestimate the benefits of a little relaxation when it comes to your mental health.

9 Types Of Camping

What kind of Camper are you?

1. Weekend Warrior

This person just wants to unwind on the weekend, but other than that really does not think too much about RVs or camping.

A person who holds a regular job during the week restricts their ability to party/go on trips/partake in awesome activities, and thus plan epic weekend adventures to compensate. As much variation and quantity of awesomeness are packed into the weekends as physically possible, warranting the rest of the work week to recharge for the next weekend.

2. Relaxing Camper

This Camping Style may be a couple or small family that enjoys getting away from home now and then and enjoying nature. You may be someone that has a family that likes to hike or get in a little fishing.

Low key daily activities and then back to camp for a fire with a good batch of smores.

Some locations you might choose are forests or around a lake that has breathtaking views to sit and read a good book.

You take in what nature has to offer and that is enough for you to enjoy your outings.

3. Family Campers – Camping Style

A family camper is all about planning trips and making memories the whole family will never forget. You get out a half dozen times a year and maybe a 2 week trip over summer when kids are out of school.

As the planner of these trips, your focus is making sure the kids have fun activities to do while camping. Maybe a trip around an amusement park or close to a great water feature.

This is how I was raised to enjoying the camping life. We did get out almost every weekend in the summer, but it was all about keeping the family happy.

Teach the kids to swim and fish, sit around the campfire and tell scary stories and just connect in a way that being at home prohibits.

4. RV Experimentalist

A Camping Style that likes to change things up as much as possible. Trying different ways to enjoy the outdoors like, Motorhome, Pop up camper, tent or the occasional cabin in the woods.

It is all about experiencing new ways of doing the same thing.

One weekend you could be at a KOA in Tennessee using your neighbors Pop up camper and 2 weeks later you are back packing in Yosemite.

Usually, this person will have solid knowledge of how things work and always willing to give new things a try.

Jack of all trades in the camping world you might say!

5. RV Enthusiast

Here is the person that is all about RV’s and camping 24/7. They research everything about the lifestyle and have spent plenty of time making sure they know the ins and outs.

An RV enthusiast will be the first person to come over and assist if they see you having an issue at your site. Often annoying to you, but in a time of need they will be the one you turn to for help.

Beware of the RV enthusiast that migrates your way as you are trying to back in or while setting up camp.

They are the nosey neighbor of the camping world!

This type of traveler gets away whenever possible and always brings a wealth of knowledge with them.

You can expect them to have a new fangled gadget to try or camping style to experiment on.

6. Off Grid Runaway Camping Style

This type of RVer is just wanting to get away from it all and most likely likes being left alone to enjoy the peace and serenity nature has to offer.

They don’t want anyone within miles of them while out in the wild. Boondocking is a way of life so they can get deep into the woods and not have the annoying neighbors generator humming in their ears.

Probably has the best solar setup that money can buy and ready to spend weeks away from civilization at a time.

This sounds like the life I would be interested in once we go full-time and have the correct setup to keep us connected. The last thing you want is to break camp early because you need to dump tanks or refill a fuel source.

No noisy neighbors, just the sounds of nature playing in my ears to keep me relaxed.

7. Full-timer

Your Camping Style is all in or at least you think you are at first. Selling your home of 20 years and everything you have acquired over the years for that life of freedom.

Kiss the family goodbye and head out on the road to see what life really has in store for you. This ends up being a nightmare for some while others roll off into the sunset and never look back.

It is exciting to think about, new front yard whenever you want, explore new towns and visit amazing places that you never thought you would get a chance to.

This is definitely my end game and hopefully it becomes reality sooner than later.

Full-timer to me has strict guidelines and some just don’t meet them.

If you still have a home to go to every time things go wrong, you are not a full-timer, you are just on a long vacation.

If you have everything you own in a storage unit ready for you to bail on this lifestyle, you are not a full-timer.

When you put an RV on some land while you are building a mansion, you are not a full-timer.

This is strictly my opinion and not meant to offend that person living in a fifth wheel parked in Moms backyard bragging they are full-time RVers.

8. Thrill Seeker

Always more interested in the adventures they find at their destination, than the camping itself.

Only thing they care about is, do we have a rock face to climb up or to jump off of. Is there any river rafting to be had? Can we camp overnight on top of the north face of El Capitan? Of, course after we climb the 3,000 foot wall.

Oh, even better, can we base jump back down the next morning?

That is an extreme example, but the point is, for thrill seekers, it is more about the adrenaline rush than the type of camping. Their end game is get the blood flowing and keep it that way.

9. Survivalist’s Camping Style

The Survivalist is one that really wants to rough it out in the woods and push their limits as much as possible. This Camping Style is the most extreme form of camping and requires a certain level of experience before you jump into it. The philosophy behind this camping style is to be self-sufficient for a certain period of time and return alive.

When it comes to this Camping Style, there are really just 2 types: Base Camping and Walkout Method.

What is Base Camping?

Base camping is when one walks or backpacks into a remote location and sets up “sort of a permanent” base. From here a camper branches out during the day, hiking trails, backpacking the area and returning to this location.

They attempt to survive on the resources they find in the area before returning home. Campers get food from the forest through trapping or fishing, as well as foraging for edible plants, berries, and nuts. Avoiding dangerous, large animals is also important since they can pose a threat.

What is Walkout Camping?

Walkout survival camping is when a Camper is dropped into the wild and has a goal of walking out back into civilization. This is a really extreme type of camping since the camper has to find a new source of water and food every single day.

Never setting up a permanent base and on the move daily from one area to the next. The challenges each day provide a new unknown territory for one to navigate.

Both Base and Walkout Camping require great survival and camping skills to properly navigate these camping styles. Some sort of training is needed on how to survive before attempting it. You will need to learn how to hunt for food in the wild, find water, make shelters, and do emergency medical treatments.

Advanced campers do such camping to put their skills to the test and know that there is a level of danger with this sort of camping.

Conclusion

In the end, it is all about how you want to spend your time in nature (or at a Jellystone family park 15 miles from your home). Just get out there and do you!

There is no right or wrong way to go camping or live in an RV. For some it is just getting away to unwind after a long week. Others, it is a way to get the family to connect away from all the distractions of the neighborhood.

While some have chosen to give up on civilization completely and go off the grid, others just want the freedom to travel as much as possible and see new sights.

You are a camper and that is all that matters, I respect your choice, whatever it may be. Except for maybe you there, living in Moms back yard and telling everyone how you struggle with being a full-time RVer.

Imagine

Close your eyes for a moment and just think about this. It’s sunrise, you roll out of your RV, morning air feeling brisk, fire from night before taking its last breath as it’s trying to reignite. You find your favorite chair in the site, turn it to look out over the lake and nestle in to relax. Birds chirping and fish jumping as the new day begins. This is what it’s all about!………. Now imagine a hot cup of coffee in your hand. Life just got so much better!
