Camping and coffee go hand and hand!
Just imagine, you are out in the woods for a quiet weekend of relaxation and your coffee maker goes out. We will show you some coffee for camping options you may not have thought of.
Noooo! I know it is not a scenario you even want to think about right now.
Sooner or later it is going to happen and it is best to be prepared with a backup plan to get your morning brew fix.
The coffee maker goes out or you lose your power source and your morning can go sideways quickly.
How can I brew my morning joe without a coffee maker while camping?
The easiest way is to heat over the campfire, just add grounds and water to a pot, and set it on the campfire to heat, stirring occasionally to keep it from burning. Remove from heat once it is steaming hot for a few minutes. Let sit for a couple of minutes to let grounds settle to the bottom. Slowly pour coffee off the top into your favorite cup.
This is a caveman way to brew coffee, but it is effective and when you need your coffee, you need your coffee.
We will cover a few more options you can use depending on the supplies you have at your disposal.
See what supplies you have and we will try to come up with several ways how to make coffee without power.

French Press
The French press is another easy way if you have one available to you. Start by adding some medium ground coffee to your French pot, add boiling water, and stir a few times. Replace the lid to the French press pot and push the plunger only to the liquid’s surface. After several minutes slowly push the plunger to the bottom. You are ready to smooth your morning EDGE.
Propane stove cooktop
Using your normal ratio of grounds to water, add to a small pot. Turn the burner to medium-high and bring the coffee to a boil. Stir occasionally and boil for 2 minutes. Remove the pot from the burner and set it aside for a few minutes to let the grounds settle. You can then slowly pour it into your cup making sure not to get any grounds. You could also scoop out with a ladle that may be available for you to use.
The below portable butane burner I have used for 30 years, they are perfect for multiple uses around the camp. Easy to store away and can be pulled out and fired up in a matter of a couple of minutes. I also like using these for an extra burner when cooking meals and you need just one more stovetop burner.
Drip Method
The drip method could also be used since most likely you have brought along some coffee filters. With this setup, you will need a container to hold a filter that lets it drip into another container or directly into your cup. Heat some water over a campfire or on the stovetop until plenty hot. Hot water is poured evenly over coffee grounds in a paper filter. With gravity, the brewed coffee drips slowly and directly into a cup or pot.

Cowboy Coffee
The same process as that was done on a propane cooktop, but an established campfire is used as a heating source. Using your normal ratio of grounds to water, add to a small pot. Find a stable level area of the fire not directly in the flames, medium heat, and bring the coffee to a boil.
Stir occasionally and boil for 2 minutes. Remove the pot from the fire (carefully) and set it aside for a few minutes to let the grounds settle. You can then slowly pour it into your cup making sure not to get any grounds. You could also scoop out with a ladle that may be available for you to use. See the below set that is perfect for this process!

Battery operated coffee maker
You probably don’t have one on hand, but you might want to get one for future emergencies. All my construction friends can relate to this heavy-duty rechargeable coffee maker.
Instant coffee option
I know this option is blasphemy for many hard-core coffee drinkers, but it is a great way to go in a pinch. All you need is some hot water and a cup to drink your coffee from and when you are camping supplies matter.
The fewer supplies you need to pack for one task allows more room for other items that may be more important in the long run.
Delicious coffee at your pace. Perfect for camping trips or long car rides. Whenever you need delicious coffee – fast.
Not your average instant coffee, Slow Ride is a robust roast without the acidity
Conclusion
As you have seen, there are many ways for you to get your cup of joy even without power or a coffee maker. If a great cup of coffee is a big part of your morning, you may want to have a plan of attack and pack a few extra utensils to help.
- Aeropress
- French Press
- Drip maker
- Quality filters
- Battery Operated coffee maker
- Instant single pack
Cold Brew is also an option that can be made up before you even leave home. It can be enjoyed cold or can be easily heated back up. This is my go-to brew method unless the temperatures really start to drop, then a hot cup of coffee is a must-have.
