20 Must-have apps for an RV: How to keep you on the road

Hello, my weary travelers!

I was in search of a good app to use for an upcoming road trip I was planning and discovered there are tons of apps for all my travel needs. I thought others would be interested in my findings so I put together this list of some of the must-have Road Warrior apps. So, let us find you the perfect app for an RV to keep you on the road.

Most of these are free apps but a few cost a couple of dollars or have premium versions.

In search of the best app for an RV

1. Roadtrippers (Trip Planning)

Roadtrippers is one of the best (and most popular) road trip planner apps out there. You can plan your journey (adding up to 150 stops with a premium account), and collaborate with friends or family. You also discover great places to stop along your routes, like national parks, roadside attractions, hotels, and more.

I personally use the free version and love it! I set my trip from start to finish and then add any stops I want along the way.

2. Togo RV (Travel)

Togo RV is the all-in-one RV app to keep RV owners organized, inspired, and safely on the move. Transform time spent on trip preparations into time spent enjoying your RV and hitting the open road! Use the Explore feature to find what’s near campgrounds and RV parks like restaurants, parks, and attractions.

3. Gasbuddy (Fuel)

The GasBuddy app is a GPS-based application program for smartphones and tablets which provides prices of nearby gas stations from user-submitted data, as well as through partnerships with other companies and directly from station operators. The app has Android, BlackBerry 10, and iOS versions.

4. IExit (Lodging)

iExit is a free mobile app for iPhones, iPads, and Android devices that tells drivers how close they are to the nearest gas station, coffee, restaurant, lodging, or even a hospital off any interstate exit. 5. AllTrails (Outdoors)

AllTrails is your guide to the outdoors! Discover the best hiking, running, and biking trails around the world. Explore 200,000+ hand-curated trail maps plus reviews and photos crowdsourced from millions of hikers, mountain bikers, and trail runners.

6. HappyCow (Fun)

HappyCow app allows you to take photos of your favorite restaurants, which we encourage you to share with our users. The app stores these photos with your other pictures on your device so you may admire them whenever you please, or upload them at a later date.

7. CoPilot RV (Navigation)

CoPilot GPS features an app specifically designed for RVs. Simply input information about your rig, and CoPilot will find an appropriate route for your weight and height. So maps are available in both 2D and 3D versions and include detailed information about road signs and turn lanes.

8. Waze (Navigation)

Waze is a community-driven map app designed by an Israeli company that was acquired by Google (GOOG) in 2013. This app uses data from app users to provide quicker navigation routes. Data is submitted both automatically as users drive around (using speeds determined by GPS signals) and can be manually entered on the app.

9. Reserve America (Campsites)

Discover available campsites across the U.S., make bookings online and access your reservations right from your mobile device. Now enhanced with 3D touch technology for iOS.

10. Recreation.gov (Campsites)

Find available campsites based on the dates for your trip and review important information on season dates and reserve the site. Log in to your Recreation.gov account, complete the order details, and reserve campsites from your phone or tablet.

11. Campendium (Campsites)

Campendium was started by a group of full-time Airestreamers as a solution to bring together all of the various information on the internet into one resource. The app also contains reviews and photos by other RVers so it is truly an RV community effort.

12. The Dyrt (Campsites)

The Dyrt is the #1 camping app, with over 500,000+ user-submitted locations, reviews, and tips across the U.S. The platform is free to use on the web, iOS, and Android, with additional functionality available in the paid PRO version.

13. RV Parky (Campsites)

RV Parky is an app and a website created by a full-time RVer for finding campgrounds, reading campground reviews, and planning your RV trip route. App Parky is updated constantly by users inputting their information, photos, and reviews as they are traveling.

14. Night Sky (Fun)


Night Sky is ready for use when it finishes downloading. Tap on this icon on your device’s home screen to start Night Sky. Once the app has launched you can review a short tutorial, then hold your device toward the sky and watch as the stars and celestial bodies appear on your screen!

15. Peak Finder (Nature)

Peak Finder gives you a 360° panoramic view identifying mountains nearby and further afield (up to 300km). The app works offline with GPS, so no mobile data is required. You simply launch the app, point your phone toward your desired direction and Peak Finder will identify the mountains and hills in front of you.

16. INaturalist (Nature)

iNaturalist​ is a free platform—both a website and app—to record observations of plants and animals in nature using photographs; share what you’ve found, and contribute to a global dataset of biodiversity information used for both science and conservation. This app helps you identify plants and animals around you, with more than 400,000 items in the catalog.

17. First Aid – by American Red Cross (Emergency)

The First Aid app puts expert advice for common emergencies at your fingertips. Videos, interactive quizzes and simple step-by-step advice make learning easy and engaging. Select English or Spanish language with an in-app toggle.

18. Accuweather (Weather)

Accuweather has everything from instant readings on what the weather’s doing now, to more detailed radar scans showing precipitation and clouds over a wider area. It’s undoubtedly one of the best weather apps out there for the depth and precision of its data.

19. Speedtest (Internet assessor)

Use Speedtest for an easy, one-tap connection internet performance and speed test —— accurate anywhere thanks to our massive global server network. Video testing empowers you with a real-time assessment of your network’s current streaming quality.

20. Sani Dumps (Fun Lol!)

This app provides the number one essential need of all RVers – a convenient place to dump your holding tanks. If you love to boondock or dry camp (or you just happen to need a place to empty the tanks) the Sani Dump app is the answer. This app provides a simple map to help you find the nearest RV dump location along with information about price, hours, and contact info.
