Imagine laying in bed on your RV Mattress and listening to those amazing sounds of nature. Crickets chirping, owls hooting, or just the wrestling of the trees outside from the east wind blowing by. I love those sounds, but this can come to a halt quickly if you are laying on an uncomfortable RV mattress. We might be able to muscle through a weekend but imagine sleeping on a stiff or mushy mattress night after night. The first thing you need to know before purchasing an upgrade is your RV Mattress Size.
Though RV mattresses are notoriously known to be hard to sleep on, some are just as good as those in your home. Factory mattress that comes with your RV will most likely be cheap and hard. A good quality mattress upgrade can go a long way.

So, what can I do?
Is one RV mattress the same as the next?
Honestly, No. There are many options for upgrades and toppers. Before we get into those, let us talk about some other ways to assure you are comfortable while on the road or in the campground.
Each of us is very different and what relaxes us changes from person to person. Some people need no light at all to sleep soundly and others like me enjoy the sounds of the ocean or a good thunderstorm.

What can we do to assure a better night’s sleep in our RV
Make sure you purchase the right RV for yourself.
- Is there enough room for everyone?
- Will you need side shelves for your comfort or a CPAP machine?
- Are there outlets for needed connections?
- Do you need a walk-around bed?
- Bedroom location (back, camp side, or neighbors camp side)
Stabilize your RV to reduce movement
Feeling like you are swaying out in the middle of the ocean every time someone moves is not a good feeling at all.
- Use wheel chocks to help with front-to-back movement
- Lower your stabilizers if you have them to reduce side-to-side sway
- Add manual stabilizers or scissor jacks to reduce side-to-side sway
- Level your RV
Whatever you can do to reduce or eliminate movement in your RV will make a good night’s sleep much more obtainable.
You want to make sure you can get the perfect temperature for you
- AC is functioning properly
- Bedside fan if needed
- Or just the perfect weather to open windows and create a crosswind
Use proper lighting to set the ambiance
- Keep lights dim once bedtime is getting close
- Blackout Curtains
- Use LED lighting (produces more blue light than regular bulbs)
- Red lights are known to improve sleep quality
- Stay off your phone before bed
- Turn off the TV before bed
- Screen time of any kind stimulates the brain and slows your good sleep process
Pick the perfect campsite
- Beware of playground locations (especially if you like to sleep in or take afternoon naps)
- Scope out possible problem neighbors (this is tough)
- Know restroom/shower locations
- Check campground maps ahead of time if available and choose wisely
- Most of all, know when to arrive – Sunday afternoon arrival gives you the best option for picking a prime site.
Drinking alcohol before bed does the opposite of what you probably think. It may make you tired but it also interferes with brain activity that is needed to let yourself naturally fall asleep.
Making your bed just that much more comfortable
- A good quality set of sheets can go a long way also. The lower the thread count and the less comfortable and scratchy they will feel.
- A new quality mattress
- A thick mattress topper
- Soft comforter
- A good pillow and then a few throw pillows
